Introduction

Take a minute to look around you. What can you see? Mommy/daddy, computer/tablet, a table or a chair, etc. Of what you can see, which do you think is living and which is non-living?

The world is made up of living and non-living things which interacts with each other everyday.
Living things are made of tiny cells which helps them to function. Non-living things are not they same, they are not made up of tiny cells.

key words you must know:

  • Living- alive now and was once alive
  • Non-living- Not alive now and never was alive
  • Reproduce- to make another living thing
  • grow- to get bigger
  • Characteristic- any feature that helps to identify something
  • Respond- to react to something that happen

Living Things

All living things are alive but some will not show signs of life without research. for example, a tree is a living thing, however, if you touch a tree it does not react the way you and I would react, but it is a living thing.

The Characteristics of a Living Thing:

  1. Movement- living things move around. They have body parts that allows them to walk or move through soil or for plants, move toward the sunlight
  2. Grow- Living things get bigger in different stages. For example: you were a baby and look how big you are now
  3. Feed/Eat- Living things survive because they eat. even plants feed too. They use the energy from the sun to make their own food and when we water them they feed
  4. Breathing- living things take oxygen gas into their body so that they can grow and live
  5. Respond to stimuli/touch- living things can tell when there are changes in the environment. Crying is a response to a stimuli. likewise, shivering is a response to a change in temperature.

Non-Living Things

All non-living things are lifeless, they are not alive. They are created and destroyed by external forces. For example, you can make a plane from paper and it still does not come alive. You can destroy that same paper plane and it still is not alive because it was never alive.

The Characteristics of Non-Living Things:

  1. They do not move
  2. They do not grow
  3. They do not feed/eat
  4. They do not breathe
  5. They do not respond to stimuli/touch
